Sting and the "band" were amazing!
The audience was captivated starting with the first song. Beyond belief was the sound of the orchestra accompanying El Tri. I found myself closing my eyes many times to get the full effect of the whole ensemble. A few featured musicians knocked it out of the park when they came forward during a song. Interesting was the stage, but it didn't detract from the performance. Three large box-like screens hung over his head and played video during many numbers. The songs were started by the conductor of the orchestra, kept the pace lively, ended the songs, and danced on stage in between. Not your typical conductor, he looked like he was having the time of his life. El Tri brought along five of his regular musicians to play with the orchestra, including his guitarist, bass player, two percussion players, and a beautiful female vocalist that danced and sang the whole concert. Between songs, he often gave a little history of the song he was about to play - where the inspiration came from and what the song was about. Some interaction with the audience occurred, as some yo-yo kept yelling Free Bird. He said he remembered the first time he smoked a joint also. So he came out for an encore and broke out into an acapella version of the song while listening to his iPod for the lyrics. Always nice, he started a couple minutes after the scheduled time, played for an hour and a half, took a twenty-minute break, then came back out for another seventy minutes including three encores. An amazing musician is El Tri, from his songwriting abilities to his voice. I will definitely attend his concert next time he is in town.
